We explain what we find and recommend the work your home needs. At the consultation, we build a 3D model of your house with the new siding so you can see how your home will look. Your project consultant brings samples to your consultation. We build your personalized estimate at that same visit and answer your questions. The James Hardie siding system

What goes on your walls, layer by layer.

Fiber cement siding is one part of a system. These are the James Hardie parts and accessories Future Remodeling installs.

Weather barrier

HardieWrap goes over the wall sheathing first, before any siding. It keeps water out of the wall while letting moisture from inside the house dry out, and every seam is taped shut.

What we use

  • The housewrap behind every board.

  • Seals the seams of the wrap.

Flashing

Windows, doors and the spots where a roof meets a wall are where water gets in. Flashing tape seals around each opening, and kick-out flashing turns roof water away from the siding.

What we use

  • Flashing tape

Peel and stick, around windows and doors.

  • Where a roof edge ends against a wall.

  • Flashing laps over it so water runs out, not in.

Siding

The boards you see go up one course at a time. Our crews set each course with a Gecko Gauge, so the reveal stays even from one end of the wall to the other.

What we use

  • Hardie® Plank lap siding
  • Hardie® Shingle siding
  • Hardie® Panel vertical siding
  • Keeps every course straight and evenly spaced.

Trim and batten

Trim and battens finish the corners, frame the windows and doors, and cover panel seams. They are what make the siding look finished.

What we use

  • Hardie® Trim boards

    Corners, windows and doors.

  • Hardie® Trim battens

Over panel seams for a board and batten look.

  • Factory baked color on siding and trim.

Soffit

Soffit panels close in the underside of the roof overhang. Vented panels let air into the attic.

What we use

  • Hardie® Soffit panels

    Solid or vented.

Fasteners

What holds it all up matters. Siding goes on with corrosion resistant nails placed where James Hardie's installation instructions require, and trim can be fastened from behind so its face stays clean.

What we use

  • Rust resistant siding nails.

  • Stainless steel ring shank nails

    For homes near the water.

  • Concealed fastening for trim.

Caulk, edges and touch-up

Caulk and touch-up are two different jobs. Caulk seals joints and openings against water. Touch-up paint hides small nicks and nail heads on the finished face. Cut edges get their own treatment.

What we use

  • Sealed at joints and openings.

  • On every field-cut edge.

  • For nicks and nail heads, used sparingly.

What Homeowners Say About Us

Questions and answers

Fiber cement siding questions homeowners ask.

What is fiber cement siding made of?

Fiber cement siding is made of cement, sand and cellulose fiber. It holds paint well. Future Remodeling installs it from James Hardie in several siding styles. Your project consultant brings samples so you can compare the look.

Is fiber cement siding better than vinyl?

It depends on what matters to you. James Hardie fiber cement siding is rated noncombustible. Fiber cement is heavy, needs careful installation and needs repainting over time. Compare the look, upkeep and fire performance before choosing.

What are the disadvantages of fiber cement siding?

It is heavy and needs careful installation. The boards need proper handling, cutting and fastening. They also need gaps above the ground, roofs and decks to help prevent moisture damage. We explain those details before you choose the material.

Does fiber cement siding need to be painted?

Yes, it needs repainting over time. Some James Hardie siding comes factory painted. Other products are painted after installation. We explain which finish comes with the siding you choose.

Can cracked fiber cement siding be repaired?

We check the siding condition, provide a repair estimate if a repair is needed, and then schedule the service.

Can fiber cement siding be installed over existing siding?

We do not. On a replacement, the old siding comes off so we can inspect the wall underneath. We address damage before installing the new water barrier and flashing. Then the new siding goes onto a wall we have checked.

What is the most common problem with fiber cement siding?

Problems usually start with installation errors rather than the board itself. Boards need the right gaps above roofs, decks and the ground. Nails driven too deeply can damage the boards. Missing flashing can let water behind the siding. We check these details when we inspect existing fiber cement siding.
